Exodus 5:1 – 6:27

1. Exodus 5:1 - 2 Moses and Aaron go to Pharaoh and said, The Lord says let my people go! But Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”

2. Exodus 5:3 – 5 Moses and Aaron said that the God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, Pharaoh said, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!”

3. Exodus 5:6 – 13 Pharaoh then gives orders that the people are to make brick without straw, but no quota will be reduced, so the slave drivers obeys telling the people to do such in obedience so they scoured the land for any stubble to use, but still fell behind.

4. Exodus 5:14 - 19 Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?” to which the Israelite overseers appealed to Pharaoh, who rebuffed them as lazy.

5. Exodus 5:19 – 21 When the Israelite overseers left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, and they said, “May the Lord look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

6. Exodus 5:22 - 23 Moses returned to the Lord and erroneously said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”

7. Exodus 6:1 – 3 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: Because of my mighty hand he will let them go; because of my mighty hand he will drive them out of his country.”

And God also said, “I am the Lord and I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the Lord I did not make myself fully known to them. 

8. Exodus 6:4 – 5 God also stated the He established a covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they resided as foreigners and that he has heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant.

9. Exodus 6:6 – 8 God tells Moses to tell the Israelites:

·        I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 

·        I will free you from being slaves to them, and

·        I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment. 

·        I will take you as my own people, and

·        I will be your God. Then you will know that

·        I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. And bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. 

·        I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.’”

Exodus 6:9 - 12 Moses reported this to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him because of their discouragement and harsh labor, so the Lord said to Moses, “Go, tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country.” but Moses said to the Lord, “If the Israelites will not listen to me, why would Pharaoh listen to me, since I speak with faltering lips? Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron about the Israelites and Pharaoh, and he commanded them to bring the Israelites out of Egypt.

Exodus 6:1 – 14 God comforts Moses through reminding Moses of His covenant and His seven “I wills.”

Application: Can you recall a time where God brought up his past performance in keeping His promises to you?

Exodus 6:15 – 27 God reminds us of his faithfulness through the genealogies of Jacob’s first three children: Reuben, Simeon and Levi.

Application: Remember from where your heritage comes from.

Matthew 4

1. Matthew 4:1 – 2 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, and after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

2. Matthew 4:3 - 4 The devil then approached Jesus saying first, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” To which Jesus replied, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
3. Matthew 4:5 – 7 Second the devil took Jesus to the highest point on the temple and said, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and the angels will save you.” To which Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
4. Matthew 4:8 – 11 Third, the devil took Jesus to a mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor and said “All this I will give you, if you will bow down and worship me.” To which Jesus responded, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Following which the devil left and angels came to Jesus and ministered to his needs.

Matthew 4:12 – 16 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galile, then leaving Nazareth, Jesus moved to Capernaum, thus fulfilling what the prophet Isaiah said, “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”

Matthew 4:18 – 20 One day as Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Peter and Andrew who were fishermen, casting a net into the lake, to who he called “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” And at once the brothers left their nets and followed Jesus.
8. Matthew 4:21 – 22 Walking on, Jesus saw two other brothers, also fishermen, James and John, who were in a boat with their father Zebedee, so Jesus called to them, so they left the boat and their father and followed him.
9. Matthew 4:23 – 24 So Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people and news about Jesus throughout Syria, and people came to Jesus with people who were ill, those suffering in pain, those demon-possessed, those having seizures, and those paralyzed; and he healed them.
