Matthew 24

1. Matthew 24:1 – 2 As Jesus left the temple he spoke to his disciples, pointing to the temple buildings, “Truly I tell you, not one stone here will be left on another; everyone will be thrown down.”

2. Matthew 24:3 – 3 While sitting on the Mount of Olives, Jesus’ disciples asked about the end of the temple, presumably end of the age and Jesus return.

3. Matthew 4 - 8 Jesus warned that there will be deceivers who will be false messiahs, wars and rumors of wars, nations will rise against each other and there will be famines, earthquakes which will signal as birth pains the end of the age.

Matthew 24:9 – 14 Jesus followers will be persecuted, hated even put to death and that many will turn away from the faith by false prophets who deceive, and that love will even grow cold, but stand firm to the end and you will be saved for the gospel will be preached in the whole world as a testimony and then the end will come.

5. Matthew 24:15 – 21 Jesus then speaks cryptically that “the abomination that causes desolation,’ spoken of through the prophet Daniel will be seen in the holy place; then everyone should flee in haste, not taking anything with them for there will be great unequalled distress in the land.

Matthew 24:22 – 22 Jesus speaks his warning that for the sake of the elect (believers) the days grow short, and beware of deceivers and do not believe those who say such things as ‘There is the Messiah’ for ‘For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.’

7. Matthew 24:28 – 29 Jesus then quotes old testament that distress such as the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’

8. Matthew 24:30 – 31 Jesus explains that “Then will appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven. And then all the peoples of the earth will mourn when they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory, and he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.”

9. Matthew 24:32 – 35 Jesus say to learn from the fig tree and know that this generation will not pass away until all these things happen and even if Heaven and earth pass away, the words of the Lord will live on forever.

10. Matthew 24:36 – 41 Jesus declares that only the Father in heaven knows the hour and day when judgment will come and the Son of Man return; just as in the days of Noah before the flood, people will be clueless and many taken.

11. Matthew 24:42 – 44 Therefore keep watch because we do not know when the Lord will come, just as the owner of the house, had he know that the thief was coming would have stood diligent and kept watch, so must we be ready for the return of the Son of Man.

12. Matthew 24:45 – 47 Who then is the faithful servant of God, whom the master put in charge and who executes his duties as expected for he will be put in charge of his master’s possessions when he returns.

Matthew 24:15 – 35 Jesus describes signs of his coming and the end of the age, tribulation and that ‘this generation’ will not pass away, but God’s word endures forever.

Application: Are you holding on to God’s enduring word and not things of this world?

Matthew 24:36 – 51 Jesus states that only the Father knows when the return will be, and describes his return through parable of the two’s: two men in field, two women grinding, the evil servant and the faithful servant so earnestly be prepared.

Application: Are you prepared for the master’s return as a faithful servant, fulfilling your duty?

Genesis 32 - 33; Lesson 24

Genesis 32

1. Genesis 32:1 – 2 Jacob traveled on when angels of God met him after which he named the place Mahanaim.

2. Genesis 32:3 – 6 Jacob sent messengers ahead to see his brother Esau instructing them to say to Esau that where he’s been and that he comes hoping to find favor in Esau’s eyes to which his messengers return to say that Esau is coming to meet Jacob along with four hundred men.

3. Genesis 32:7 – 12 Jacob divides the people into two groups that should Esau attack, half may get away then prayed for God’s protection from Esau even though God had declared to him that he would prosper Jacob.

4. Genesis 32:13 – 21 Jacob spend the night there then chooses to give a great gift of livestock (split into groups, one following the other with distance between) to Esau which he has his servants drive ahead and give as a gift to Esau so when they meet Esau he will pacify / feel favorable to Jacob’s coming.

5. Genesis 32:22 – 30 That night Jacob sent his family, servants and their possessions across the stream Jabbok and remained on his side where he struggled / wrestled with God throughout the night, after which Jacob would not let the man (God) go until he (God) blessed him, to which God caused Jacob’s hip to be wrenched, then changed Jacob’s name to Israel and blessed him there, but would not tell him his name, and Jacob (now Israel) called the place Peniel.

6. Genesis 32:31 – 32 The sun rose, Jacob limped and a tradition was born that Israelites do not eat the tendon attached to the socket of the hip, because the socket of Jacob’s hip was touched near the tendon.

Genesis 33

7.Genesis 33:1 – 3 Then Jacob looked up to see Esau coming with his 400 men so Jacob ordered his family and servants behind him then he, himself went ahead and bowed down to the ground 7 times as his brother approached.

8. Genesis 33:4 – 4 But Esau ran to Jacob, embraced him, threw his arms about him and kissed him and they both wept.

9. Genesis 33:5 – 7 Esau asked who were the people with Jacob who then answered, “They are the children God has graciously given your servant.” And to which Jacob replied with introductions, each family member bowed down.

10. Genesis 33:8 – 12 Esau then asked about the gift of livestock to which Jacob and his brother bantered about keeping the gift and because Jacob insisted, Esau accepted, then Esau said,  “Let us be on our way; I’ll accompany you.”

11. Genesis 33: 13 – 17 Jacob, for some reason, does not want his brother, or his brother’s men,  to travel with him, so he declines their offer stating that he is moving far too slowly, but promises to meet up in Seir, yet Jacob goes to Sukkoth (not Seir as stated) where he built a place for his family and shelters for the livestock.

12. Genesis 33:18 - 20 Then after Jacob came from Paddan Aram, he arrived safely at Shechem in Canaan and camped within sight of the city, and for a hundred pieces of silver bought the plot of ground where he pitched his tent, then set up an altar and called it El Elohe Israel.

Ephesians 4

1. v1 - 6 Paul starts with an encouragement that like a prisoner for the one hope of your calling;  one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, we are to live lives worthy of His calling in us: humble, gentle, patient, loving, unity of the Spirit.

2. v7 - 13 To each us is given grace by Christ’s gift and that we should be in unity, some using their gifts to be apostles, some to be prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers to prepare God’s people for works of service that the body of Christ be built up, united in faith and knowledge and maturing in Christ.

3. v14 - 16 We are to no longer be children in Christ, but strive to mature so we will not be blown by differing doctrine. Instead, speaking truth in love we grow so as to edify the body in love.

4. v17 - 24 Testify of God’s work, no longer living like Gentiles: futile thinking, darkened understanding, separated from God, hardened. Spiritually insensitive, indulge in sensuality. Put off the former way of life and the old corrupt man and put on the new man renewed in the spirit of your mind created according to God.

5. v25 – 32 So put off falsehood and be truthful. Get rid of bad stuff and turn from sin and do not grieve the Holy Spirit by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Be kind, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as Christ forgave you.

Ephesians 5

6. v1 - 7 Therefore be imitators of God as children, thankful in nature,  walking in love, not in foolish things of this world such as fornication, course talk, as Christ loved us and gave Himself for us, not being deceived by empty words and wrath for these come from the “sons of disobedience.”

7. v8 – 14 Where once we were darkness, now we are light, so walk as children of light for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth, having no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them for all things that are exposed are made visible.

8. v15 - 20 Walk in wisdom, nor as the foolish walk, understanding what the Lord’s will is, being filled with the Holy Spirit,  speaking and singing hymns and spiritual songs making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God.

Ephesians 6

8. v1 - 4 Children honor and obey your parents with respect that you will prosper, obeying the first commandment that it may be well with you and similarly fathers do not provoke your children to wrath, but raise them up in admonition of the Lord.

9. v5 – 9 V5 – 9 Whoever you serve or lead, be obedient to those leading you, or kind to whom serves you, doing such as if to Christ, serving with goodwill from the heart, for your doing good will be received in like kind from your Master who is in Heaven.
