Matthew 5:17 - 48

1. Matthew 5: 17 – 18 Christ declares that he has come to fulfill the whole law not abolish it.

2. Matthew 5:19 – 20 Anyone who sets aside part of the Law will be considered least in the kingdom, and whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven so unless your righteousness is true you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
3. Matthew 5:21 – 24 Christ declares that murder, even anger toward a bro or sister will be subject to judgment, so reconcile yourself to those before coming to the throne of Jesus.
4. Matthew 5:25 – 26 Settle legal matters quickly with those who legal issues with you.
5. Matthew 5:27 – 28 Christ declares that our attitude toward lust is a heart issue comparable to the sin of adultery.
6. Matthew 5:29 – 30 Christ teaches us through figure of speech to guard our heart through the power of the Word and Holy Spirit to keep us pure.
7. Matthew 5:31 – 32 Christ explains that though the Law toward divorce stands, he explains that divorce on grounds other than for sexual immorality makes the wife an victim of adultery.
8. Matthew 5:33 – 37 Keep your oath; a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ will do; just do what you say you’ll do.
9. Matthew 5:38 – 42 On ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth’ (Exodus 21:24) Christ teaches us to resist the temptation to resent insult and seek retaliation for slight.
10. Matthew 5:43 – 48 Jesus tell us that all of mankind is made by God and should be considered our neighbors and as such love them.

Matthew 4

1. Matthew 4:1 – 2 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, and after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.

2. Matthew 4:3 - 4 The devil then approached Jesus saying first, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” To which Jesus replied, “Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
3. Matthew 4:5 – 7 Second the devil took Jesus to the highest point on the temple and said, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down and the angels will save you.” To which Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
4. Matthew 4:8 – 11 Third, the devil took Jesus to a mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor and said “All this I will give you, if you will bow down and worship me.” To which Jesus responded, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’” Following which the devil left and angels came to Jesus and ministered to his needs.
5. Matthew 4:12 – 16 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galile, then leaving Nazareth, Jesus moved to Capernaum, thus fulfilling what the prophet Isaiah said, “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles— the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.”
6. Matthew 4:17 – 17 Here is where Jesus began his public ministry preaching, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
7. Matthew 4:18 – 20 One day as Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Peter and Andrew who were fishermen, casting a net into the lake, to who he called “Come, follow me, and I will send you out to fish for people.” And at once the brothers left their nets and followed Jesus.
8. Matthew 4:21 – 22 Walking on, Jesus saw two other brothers, also fishermen, James and John, who were in a boat with their father Zebedee, so Jesus called to them, so they left the boat and their father and followed him.
9. Matthew 4:23 – 24 So Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and healing every disease and sickness among the people and news about Jesus throughout Syria, and people came to Jesus with people who were ill, those suffering in pain, those demon-possessed, those having seizures, and those paralyzed; and he healed them.
10. Matthew 4:25 Large crowds from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan all followed him.

1. Matthew 2:1 – 2  After Jesus was born in Bethlehem, during the time of King Herod, Wise men from the east came to Jerusalem to worship the Messiah asking when they saw his star, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?”

2. Matthew 2:3 – 4 King Herod hears of this and along with everyone in Jerusalem are disturbed which prompts Herod to call the people’s priests and teachers of the law to ask where the Messiah was to be born.
3. Matthew 2:5 – 6 The priests and teachers said Bethlehem for it is written:
“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
4. Matthew 2:7 – 8 So Herod sent for the Wise men and deceitfully charged them with finding the baby telling them to return and tell him where to find the child.
5. Matthew 2:9  After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
6. Matthew 2:10 - 11When they saw the star, they were overjoyed and on coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him and opened gifts and presented Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
7. Matthew 2:12 The Wise men were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, so they returned to their country by another route.
8. Matthew 2:13 When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up and take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
9. Matthew 2:14 - 15 So Joseph immediately got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
10. Matthew 2:16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
11. Matthew 2:17 - 18 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
 “A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
12. Matthew 2:19 - 20 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”
13. Matthew 2:21 So Joseph got up and took Jesus and Mary and went back to the land of Israel.
14: Matthew 2:22 - 23 But when Joseph heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea, he was afraid to go back, but having been warned in a dream, he moved the family to a town called Nazareth, thus fulfilled what was said by the prophets, that the Messiah would be called a Nazarene.

BSF Study 2013 - 2014: Book of Matthew

Welcome to Homiletics101!

Bible Study Fellowship, Intl. will be studying the New Testament book of Matthew this year. The scriptures, the stories, the parables and the words of Jesus are just as applicable today as they were when our Savior walked planet Earth as both fully Man and fully God some 2000 years ago. We'll be studying Matthew verse by verse and posting the Homiletcs studies following the BSF study sheets. A few of the many famous verses to be studied are:

 “Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” Matthew 4:4 (NIV)

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Matthew 5:17  (NIV)
