Lesson 2

Passage Exodus 2:11-25

Moses sees and reacts to Israelite hard labor and kills Egyptian and flees. (Exodus 1:11-15a)

Matthew 2 - Lesson 2

1. Matthew 2:1 – 2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem, during the time of King Herod, Wise men from the east came to Jerusalem to worship the Messiah asking when they saw his star, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?”

2. Matthew 2:3 – 4 King Herod hears of this and along with everyone in Jerusalem are disturbed which prompts Herod to call the people’s priests and teachers of the law to ask where the Messiah was to be born.
3. Matthew 2:5 – 6 The priests and teachers said Bethlehem for it is written:
“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler who will shepherd my people Israel.’”
4. Matthew 2:7 – 8 So Herod sent for the Wise men and deceitfully charged them with finding the baby telling them to return and tell him where to find the child.
5. Matthew 2:9 After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.
6. Matthew 2:10 - 11When they saw the star, they were overjoyed and on coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him and opened gifts and presented Jesus with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
7. Matthew 2:12 The Wise men were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, so they returned to their country by another route.
8. Matthew 2:13 When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up and take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.”
9. Matthew 2:14 - 15 So Joseph immediately got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, where he stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had said through the prophet: “Out of Egypt I called my son.”
10. Matthew 2:16 When Herod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious, and he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had learned from the Magi.
11. Matthew 2:17 - 18 Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:
“A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
12. Matthew 2:19 - 20 After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said, “Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who were trying to take the child’s life are dead.”
13. Matthew 2:21 So Joseph got up and took Jesus and Mary and went back to the land of Israel.
14: Matthew 2:22 - 23 But when Joseph heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea, he was afraid to go back, but having been warned in a dream, he moved the family to a town called Nazareth, thus fulfilled what was said by the prophets, that the Messiah would be called a Nazarene.

1. Matthew2:1 – 6 Wise men come from the East to worship and honor the Messiah.

Application: Be careful as to what star are you following to the Messiah, as even the wise men missed following the star to Christ and instead found themselves at evil’s door.

2. Matthew2:7 – 12 Herod plots to find and kill the baby Messiah.

Application: How are you discerning God’s plan, direction and protection for you and your family?

3. Matthew2:13 – 23 Instructed in a dream, Joseph leads his family to Egypt to wait for a time when it will be safe to return; then returns to Israel but to the area of Galilee called Nazareth .

Application: How are you listening to God speaking to you? Through His Word and prayer?
